Under Currents by Nora Roberts romantic suspense mystery thriller romance

A Tough Heart-wrenching Opening

Under Currents by Nora Roberts opens with the introduction of Zane Bigelow, a teenager with his heart set on becoming a pro baseball player, and his younger sister, Brit. Their parents have created the perfect life—he’s a successful surgeon, she’s the devoted wife who keeps up their perfect house. And the kids’ jobs are to be the perfect kids. But behind the closed doors of their flawless lake-front home, circumstances are far from ideal.

Nora describes what Zane and Brit must endure at home in such detail that I nearly felt the blows myself. She is so masterful at developing characters and describing scenes that I find myself studying her writing as I go and learning from the master.

I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough (in my case, listen long enough — I was listening to the audio) during Part I of the story. And thankfully, since I decided to rearrange two rooms in my house and move my entire office this past weekend, I got lots of listening time.

The Setting In Under Currents Was Like Another Character

One of the things I’ve always admired about Nora’s novels is how she can turn a setting into one of the characters. Under Currents is set in a lakeside town of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. And the small town comes to life as the story unfolds.

You guys know how I love small town suspense.

Final Thoughts on Under Currents

I loved Under Currents. I especially loved the audio version. January LaVoy did an excellent job narrating. This was a thought-provoking, captivating story of how a people can hurt each other, heal, and find love. The characters were captivating, the romance was sensual, and the suspense was a complete thrill-ride.
